Resist Stigma Reading Group

In planning a Resist Stigma Reading Group event, you will need:
- Location (physically accessible, with gender neutral-washrooms)
- 1 group facilitator (from the Resist Stigma project)
- An article or movie for discussion
- Event Poster
- Use template Resist Stigma poster and update with the event details
- Facebook Event
- If possible, a local researcher who is experienced in gay men’s health and/or stigma research and who is willing to participate in the discussion group.
Suggested articles:
- “Race Relations and Racism in the LGBTQ Community of Toronto: Perceptions of Gay and Queer Social Service Providers of Color”, article written by Sulaimon Giwa and Cameron Greensmith
- “Sexual Stigma: Putting Sexual Minority Health Issues in Context”, article written by Gregory M. Herek, Regina Chopp, and Darryl Strohl
- Stigma as a Fundamental Cause of Population Health Inequalities”, article written by Mark L. Hatzenbuehler and Bruce G. Link
- “Do I Sound Gay?”, film by Dan Savage
In the 2 weeks leading up to the event:
- Post the Facebook group online, and make sure to request RSVPs
- Space should be limited to 10-12 people
- Send the article to everyone who RSVPs
- Post a reminder to the Facebook event to request RSVPs
In preparation for the event itself, you will need
- Land Acknowledgement Statement
- Sign-In Sheet
- Evaluation forms
- Facilitation Guide, with questions prepared for discussion
- Name tags
- Pens
- Snacks
Room setup:
- Chairs set up in a circle
- Food table
- Welcome table, with sign-in sheet and nametags
- Facilitator should be at the welcome table to introduce themselves and welcome participants.
