Resist Stigma – Reading Group Facilitation Guide

6:00PM-6:10PM

Welcome & Check-In

  • Welcome, introduction of facilitator and purpose of event
  • Land acknowledgement
  • Remind people of accessibility (location of washrooms, etc…)

6:15PM-6:30PM

Group Activity: Icebreaker

  • Ask everyone to introduce themselves and include pronouns
  • Facilitate an icebreaker activity so that the group becomes acquainted with one another
    • E.g., Go around the group with everyone saying their name, pronoun, favourite dessert, and what stigma means to them or what brought them to this event

6:30PM-7:00PM

Discussion

Ask the group participants for initial impressions from the article.

If there is a researcher present, ask them to speak about their experience in the field and their impressions of the article

Ask questions (prepared in advance) related to the topic of the article or related to the research conducted in the article:

7:00PM-7:10PM

Break

7:10PM-7:40PM

Discussion continued

Follow-up on any lingering topics that may have come up before the break. If none, ask other questions from your prepared list.

7:40PM-8:00PM

Check out
